David M. Gershenson, MD

GershensonDr. Gershenson is Professor and J. Taylor Wharton, M.D., Distinguished Chair in Gynecologic Oncology in the Department of Gynecologic Oncology and Reproductive Medicine at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, where he joined the faculty in 1979 after completing his fellowship training. His major research focus is on clinical and translational aspects of rare ovarian tumors.

Since 1999, he has served as Co-Principal Investigator of MD Anderson’s NCI-funded SPORE in Ovarian Cancer and, more recently, as Co-Project Leader of Project 3, “Personalized Therapy for Women with Low-Grade Serous Carcinoma of the Ovary.” Dr. Gershenson also serves as Chair of the Gynecologic Oncology Group’s (GOG) Rare Tumor Committee and as a member of the GOG Protocol Development Committee. He is a Co-Chair of the NCI’s Gynecologic Cancer Steering Committee.

Since 2009, he has served as Chairman of the Foundation for Women’s Cancer. Since 2006, he has served as a Director of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Gershenson is also Editor Emeritus of the journal Gynecologic Oncology.

The CDC recently announced that fewer than half of American children are given the HPV vaccination.

Research

As of the July 23 deadline, 55 research abstracts were submitted in hopes of receiving one of only 6 grants from the Foundation. This points to a need for more funding so that the Foundation may award grants to every deserving applicant.
