Fidel A. Valea, MD

Dr. Valea is an associate professor and Vice-Chair of Education in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Duke University Health System.  He is also the Residency Program Director in Obstetrics and Gynecology as well as the fellowship director in Gynecologic Oncology at Duke University Hospital.

After completing both his Residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology as well as Fellowship in Gynecologic Oncology at the University of North Carolina, he joined the faculty in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Stony Brook where he became Residency Program Director as well as the Director of Gynecologic Oncology until he joined the faculty at Duke in 2004. He is a full member of several organizations including the Society of Gynecologic Oncology as well as member of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology Division of Gynecologic Oncology.  He has won numerous national and regional teaching awards and has over 60 peer-reviewed publications. His research interests are in cervical cancer as well as pre-invasive disease of the cervix and evidence based perioperative care.

Awareness

Vaccine efficacy against vulvar infection with HPV 16/18 was comparable to the efficacy found against cervical infection 4 years after vaccination, according to researchers with the National Cancer Institute.
