BarakatDr. Barakat is the Chief of the Gynecology Service, the Vice Chair of Clinical Activities for the Department of Surgery, as well as the Ronald O. Perelman Chair in Gynecologic Surgery at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Dr. Barakat has a strong interest in quality of life research and was recently funded as the Principal Investigator of an R01 entitled “The Lymphedema and Gynecologic Cancer (LEG) Study: Incidence, Risk Factors, and Impact” study (R01CA162139; 9/1/11–8/31/16), which will evaluate the incidence, risk factors, and QOL impact of lymphedema on women surgically treated for gynecologic cancer.

Dr. Barakat also served as the Vice Chairman of the Cancer Prevention Committee of the Gynecologic Oncology Group for 5 years and still remains actively involved with cancer prevention studies on that national committee. He is also an examiner for the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the former president of both the Metropolitan Gynecologic Cancer Society and the New York Obstetrical Society. He is an author on more than 290 peer-reviewed articles and one of the editors of Principles and Practice of Gynecology Oncology, a leading text in the field.

Awareness

A new SGO Clinical Practice Statement states women diagnosed with epithelial ovarian, tubal, and peritoneal cancers should be considered for genetic counseling and testing, even in the absence of a family history.
