Sharmila Makhija, MD, MBA

MahkijaDr. Makhija is Professor of Gynecologic Oncology, the Donald E. Baxter Endowed Chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Women’s Health at the University of Louisville School of Medicine.

She completed her Fellowship in Gynecologic Oncology at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. Dr. Makhija received the Georgia Cancer Coalition’s Distinguished Cancer Clinicians and Scientists Award and was named to the Top 15 Doctors in Women’s Healthcare, each annually for the past four years. She serves on the editorial board for the Journal of Oncology Practice and is a reviewer for the journals Gynecologic Oncology, the International Journal of Gynecological Cancer and Clinical Cancer Research.

The CDC recently announced that fewer than half of American children are given the HPV vaccination.

Research

As of the July 23 deadline, 55 research abstracts were submitted in hopes of receiving one of only 6 grants from the Foundation. This points to a need for more funding so that the Foundation may award grants to every deserving applicant.
