January is Cervical Health Awareness Month. In addition to cervical cancer patient resources that are available on the Foundation for Women’s Cancer (FWC) website, there is a recently updated cervical cancer brochure (Cervical Cancer: Your Guide) and a new Spanish language version (Cáncer de Cúello de Útero: Su Guía). These titles can be downloaded from the website and are also available for professional printing and shipping. To order brochures, simply complete the FWC brochure order form and return it by email, fax or mail along with payment. If you have any questions about ordering, please contact FWC at 312-578-1439 or FWCinfo@sgo.org.
Risk factors for cervical cancer
FWC encourages everyone to learn about the risk factors associated with cervical cancer.
- Almost all cervical cancer is caused by a persistent human papillomavirus (HPV) infection
- Cervical cancer usually affects women between 30 and 50, but younger women are also at risk
- Smoking weakens the immune system, which can lead to persistent HPV infection
